APOE: The Key Suspect

The most well-known genetic risk factor for Alzheimer's disease is the apolipoprotein E (APOE) gene. APOE is involved in the metabolism of cholesterol in the brain. Three different alleles (variants) of the APOE gene exist: ε2, ε3, and ε4. Individuals who inherit the ε4 allele have an increased risk of developing Alzheimer's, while those with the ε2 allele have a reduced risk.
